Painting Zombicide Invader: Flingers

Updated: May 9, 2021

Of all the extra Xeno types in the #ZombicideInvader kickstarter I was probably most looking forward to painting the Flingers. These ranged Xenos pose a unique problem of where you end your turn as they can be quite deadly being able to shoot up to three zones away. Anyway, I finally got around to painting them I and I thought I would share how I did it.

Recipe

For this paint job I used the following paints and materials.

  • Citadel Grey Seer Spray

  • Citadel Contrast Guilliman Flesh

  • Citadel Contrast Plaguebearer Flesh

  • Citadel Contrast Volupus Pink

  • Citadel Contrast Shyish Purple

  • Citadel Contrast Apothecary White

  • Citadel Technical Lahmian Medium

  • Formula P3 Menoth White Highlight

  • Formula P3 Frostbite

  • Formula P3 Bog Moss

  • Formula P3 Sulfuric Yellow

  • Formula P3 Beaten Purple

  • Formula P3 Carnal Pink

  • Formula P3 Ryn Flesh

  • Formula P3 Midlund Flesh

  • Formula P3 Morrow White

  • Formula P3 Battlefield Brown

  • Citadel Technical Martian Ironearth

Technique

I started out by basecoating everything with Grey Seer Spray.

Next I washed the legs with Guilliman Flesh

The I mixed up some Plaguebearer Flesh with some Bog Moss and applied this liberally across the main body. The Bog Moss thickens the pigment in the contrast paint giving better coverage but still shading the recesses.

Next I added some Beaten Purple to the tail.

Then, I mixed some Carnal Pink with some Volupus Pink and washed the spine and tongue

Next I based the models. I would normally base last but I wanted to avoid getting the basing materials on the finished mini. Basing was a layer of Battlefield Brown, followed by Martian Ironearth.

Once that had cured I watered down some Volupus Pink with Lahmian Medium and washed the spines and tongues again. I also hit the tails with a little Shyish Purple.

Next I mixed some Beaten Purple with some white and hit the tails with a little drybrushing. Then, with some Menoth White Highlight I picked out the teeth.

Using Carnal Pink I added some segmented detailing to the tongues and then set about detailing the faces. I used Frostbite, followed by White to add a series of dots to hopefully create a mottled finish.

Then, using Sulfuric Yellow i picked out the area around the spine.

Next I mixed up some white and Apothecary White and washed the faces, hoping to blend the dots and give the skin that mottled look. Then, using the same mix I added in some Bog Moss and used that to highlight the veins on the bodies.

Finally I needed to paint the legs, the worst part of these minis unfortunately. There is so much flashing that they are not a smooth paint. I used Midlund Flesh and an edge highlight of Ryn Flesh.

The final detail was to add a drop of 'Ardcoat to the spines and tails to give them that glossy finish.

And here we have all 16, painted across six hours and looking pretty threatening I must say. I also managed to slot in a single survivor this week and he's ready to pass judgement over these xenos!

Until next week, have fun painting!

The Duke

The Duke is 7 wins for 7 in Zombicide Invader so far, but I don't know how much longer his luck can hold out!
